Avira is the fastest along with Microsoft Security Essentials but you mentioned them at the bottom of the list.

    Why is that?

  • Dev Duff

This is just a preliminary list. Once the 2011 candidates of these antivirus software are released, I will be testing them on my lab computer to see how they perform. It is going to be rough-tough as I will be deliberately infecting the lab computer with nasty virus and spyware to test these antivirus software. Please stay tuned, I have no idea as of now which antivirus software will perform the best.
    Dev.

  • kat

Cool computer lab. Looks like the results gonna be really awesome in this topic. I hope to see them soon…

  • Andrew Keir

I think I”ll be going back to norton. I gave it up a few years ago as it had gotten a little bloated, and have been using Avast since instead. Though a few virii have sliped through Avast for me lately, it might be time to go back to Norton I think.

  • daniyal

Sorry for norton lovers Bitdefender is far far better then norton according to me the top 3 must be in this series

    1. BitDefender Antivirus 2011

    2. Kaspersky Antivirus 2011

    3. Norton Antivirus 2011

  • Kat

Bitdefender is always at the top, no doubt but i was thinking what about ESET NOD32 anit virus.

  • Dev Duff

    Hello Kat,

ESET Nod32 is very good. I like it because it is very fast, doesn’t slowdown your computer. But the price is a little extra in comparison to other antivirus software. The cheapest among the best is Bitdefender.

  • Raha

    Hello All

Quick Heal and Bitdefender are my Favorite.

    Best Regards

  • Dr.Gokul

Kaspersky2011 slipped a trojan few days ago…and when eset node4 was installed it immediately cleaned it.

  • Dr.Gokul

as some 1 said…Eset no doubt is verrrrry fast and silent…no holding of memory..good

  • Mobin

    Quick Heal Is The Best

  • Samy

What do you think of eScan you didn `t included in the list,
But the product is very good as to me.Particularly eScan 11 version,
    Try it.

  • Gugy

Should be awesome to see the end result – can’t wait.
In our support / repairs section across South Africa (just over a hundred stores) we use Kaspersky and have found it brilliant – one of few that can succesfully remove Virut. Price and performance is tops.
Main reason why we like this, is due to many customer machines with a variety of different AVs which still got infected.
And look at Kasperskys’ track record – mostly in the top 5 – every time!

  • Brian

According to the list, is there any antivirus able to clean or cure Virut?

  • Dev Duff

Hi Brian, yes there are many tools that can clean the Virut infection:

    http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2009-022016-4444-99
    http://free.avg.com/ww-en/win32-virut

There may be more, but just Googled “Virut Removal” and found these free tools.

  • Bubblez

I loved Norton 360 :) And I totally agree that Norton is one of the top. But how come Avast isn’t on there?

  • Thawfeeq

Norton 360 was really slowing my computer down……
I have my lab laptop in which i use 30 different antivirus…….
And the best i can see in 2011 version is:
    1.)Norton
    2.)ESET NOD 32
    3.)Bitdefender
    4.)Kaspersky
    5.)AVG
    6.)Zone Alarm
    7.)McAfee
    8.)Trend Micro
    9.)CA Antivirus
    10.)Panda

  • koko wawa

    where is g data anti-virus?

  • sk

    norton is is at top…
avira,nod32 could not completely disinfct my pc…
    but nis did it…………………………

  • jasem

From the numerous experiments since 2002, I did not find generally better than Norton
I can always trust him to offer thanks to technology and development of viruses, especially 360 and either of the old devices I would recommend using nod32

  • Curious

You should test vipre antivirus.. its new, and Im curious to see if it’s legit.

  • Jesper

I have only one question. Can you add memory foot print to your list of criteria ? I have found that some AV programs installs nicely, looks cool, does everything you want, but as soon as you use it, running a scan or otherwise is just sitting in the background it grabs vast chunks of memory, and therefore causes other applications to run slowly. I have seen AV products that takes up 50MB of ram, and others take up 250+ MB of ram.

  • jeffmes

BitDefender 2011 is the best of them all. With is features, along with the detention . PC tune up, web parent control, Laptop mode etc and the price . It beats all the AntiVirus software to the number 1 spot for me.

  • Fran

I like Norton’s great depth and heuristic intellectuality, however, Norton won’t permit me to use System Restore. I don’t see any slowing compared to Kaspersky, Antivir, or Avast. Norton IS #1!

  • carlo

    what about AVAST ??
did it disappear or change name?? it used to be widely popular

  • renji

I am using microsoft security essential. Is it needed to use any other antivirus along with this. Hope your response.

  • Dev Duff

    Hi renji,

Microsoft Security Essentials is a new software and I think it is free. I wouldn’t trust anything “free” because there is always some catch in the so called “free software”. Go with the BitDefender security. The antivirus is just $29.95 and the complete security package is just $39.95 for 1 year subscription. I think it is pretty cheap. Think, should you risk your personal data and information to save that little amount? Just my opinion.

    Regards.

  • Shonun

I’ve been a satisfied user, from both product and support perspective, of Vipre for the past two years. That said, I won’t ask “why isn’t my favorite [fill in the blank] software sitting in a high position on this list?” I am curious about Norton’s high rating, however. What are they doing differently for the 2011 version that earns this? Norton has a well-deserved and well-documented reputation for bloatware, along with system slowdowns and resource issues, difficulty in managing/removing it, and problems with account renewals. The corporate version was somewhat better, but the home user version was problematic for many users for years. What’s up with this rating? Thanks.

  • FreddyK

Hi I have used Nod32 for about 4 years now, and it’s an awesome product I never had any down time due to viruses over the past years. However I’m busy testing a demo of Viper Antivirus and it’s also shaping up to be a winner. So I would say that one should at least try a trial of both Nod32 and Viper. Btw they both very low on resources as well, I would highly recommend Nod32 or Viper for a high end gamer or for a none down time environment for the working class.

  • Manique

I don’t like BitDefender Antivirus. It blocks the website and opens very slowly. So I prefer AVG & Kaspersky Internet Security 2011. It is the best antivirus in my life. Thank You

  • steven

i am 100% percent certain that vipre will win this year thank’s to vipre my pc is a fast as if it’s always newly reformatted plus it’s very cheap.

  • Paul

I have BitDefender 2011 on my other PC and it works great! I’m currently torn between Norton and Esset nod 32. I want to try these on my other computer. Does Norton really slow down your computer? Is it really heavy on resources? Any suggestions?

  • jakevams

So far Norton is the best.. I’ve tried other brands but still went back to Norton… I rather rely on Norton than any AV… Your pc is completely secured, thanks to Norton…

  • Ben-Hur Castilho

Hi guys, I found all of your comments and suggestions helpfull, during my every-year-looking-thru-reviews searching for the best antivirus buy of the year.

I’m a long time user of BitDefender, and my last notebook came with a Norton 2011 pre-installed license. But I need to renew 3 BitDefender licenses and sincerily don’t know what to buy.

I found some good comments, and a very good evaluation about the “VIPRE Antivirus Premium”. But it looks like a new product (no previous reference is available). Do you ever listen something about this antivirus ? Good news or not ?

    Thank you, best regards.

  • Mehmood Khan

I trust only NOD32 with my digital world. It is the best antivirus around.
It is simply, stays out of your sight, does its job well. What more do you need.
    Thanx ESET.
    Keep up the good work.

  • OM MOHOKAR

i have avast free edition antivirus installed in my laptop, but i want to install another antivirus. Should i install Bitdefender 2011 total security or other than this.

  • chunna

norton antivirus is the best antivirus 100/100% secure

  • maverick

They all suck, they cant remove all the infections that a virus brings alone. If you use the paid for or free versions of all those listed above they still won’t get the job done. You run super anti-spyware and malwarebytes after those scans and those 2 will pick up the additional problems viruses bring along, but thats also saying that spyware ane malware cant do them alone. Pretty much lately you need to run all 3 to really effectively remove the virus infections and then you arent done after that as you need to patch how in the world the virus got onto your computer in the first place. And many computer companies just msconfig the problem on startup and do the quick scans and 90% of the time the full scans pick up additional issues. Like I tell everyone I wouldnt waste a penny on virus protection as all the free stuff can remove the problems.

Rankings should start with Norton and ESET at the top…. I’ve also used Bitdefender…. it’s a bit heavy on resources… And increses the boottime by manifolds….!!

hey can i ask? are this combination good for my computer..Norton Internet Security+Malwarebytes Pro+SuperAntiSpyware Free Version+USB Disk Security Pro..or just suggest me other combination u have in your computer..

  • Sittie

I’ve had avast last year and guess what?
I need to reformat my laptop because… i dunno.
    It’s not a very nice antivirus i guess…
And I don’t feel like trying it again. >.<"

ESET is really nice for me. I think it's the best, but my aunt bought me Kaspersky this year and I just installed it….
It keeps on saying "databases are obsolete" though and I don't like this red circle, lol
But I guess I'll love it.
I hope so, as many people are giving positive feedbacks for it. =)
Still, i think ESET is the best…very fast, silent and easy to use.

Hey, has anyone tried McAfee? Is it nice? I had it on trial when I bought my laptop, but I dunno…
My aunt likes Norton 360, but I've heard it slows down your pc..
    Oh well.

  • Najib

Easy to install, easy to you, does not bother you with annoying massages, it is somewhere in your device but for sure it does its work properly.
    Good, Fast and Perfect!
    Eset!.

By the way, i am using it since 2004 and have tried nearly every software of the computer world and at last i come back to the origin.Because it is something different. those who use it knows.

  • Jydeman

I can always recommend eset, norton and bit defender. They are fast and will protect your computer from any virus attack.

  • Samrat

Hey, I am a new visitor to this website. And moreover, I wanted to know that firstly, how these anti-viruses are rated as 1-10, and is there ANYWAY that “AVG” is a better anti-virus compared to the other one’s in the market? Let it be in terms of price, quality, service or anything.

Please do send me an answer to this as soon as possible!

    Thank you
    Regards

    Samrat

Norton 360 isn’t that good. The protection is very expensive! My sister uses Norton AntiVirus (I think 2010)on her laptop, but it still runs really slow. McAfee usually detects everything as a virus when it’s not. When my brother downloaded iTunes, McAfee detected it as a virus when it really wasn’t. I use Microsoft Security Essentials, and it is VERY essential! It’s totally free, and very easy to control. Like scanning ALL files, updating virus and spyware definitions, it’s a really good software. There are new versions of MSE, and it’s really easy to upgrade. I don’t know about the other softwares because I’ve never used those before, but the other ones are really good based on what I’ve read about these comments.

  • Piotr

I have just bought Bit Defender 2011 for three years – cheap and fast. Altogether I paid 37 euro for three years usage! Now I could read somewhere that this is three computers license! That would be awesome as I could install it on my other computer. That was a good deal! Previously I was testing eset – it’s really good but as some people already mentioned – too expensive! Beside it it annoys with some analysis reports regarding some files which are sent to the hq of Eset! No way! I won’t allow any company to analyze my computer! That’s a big cons…

  • wilfred

panda cloud antivirus is the best

  • GOD

Anyone saying that a particular Antivirus is best is highly likely biased and quite likely has a vested interest in selling that product.

NO antivirus is perfect that is for sure.

Avira Antivirus, Avast and Kaspersky, one of these would be my choice.

  • Ritz...

HMMM…. cant they provide it free…

  • Ron

I tested AVIRA but the popup message is to annoying when it comes to virus detection.

Our company is using ESET NODE32 Antivirus 4, the performance is very good.

  • STELVIO

    NEVER PROBLEM WITH NORTON.

I THINK NORTON THE BEST ONE

  • Bob B

While there is a lot to choose from, I’ve used Vipre Premium for 2 years and find it fast, efficient, and their customer service is very helpful when and if you need it. Someone would have to show me otherwise before I would put them at the bottom of any list.

  • shqiprim

    ESET NOD32 THE BEST ONE

  • ogie

for me ESET NOD32 is the best i used it in my desktop and all i can say is, this is the coolest and best anti virus that i’ve ever use.

  • Tyler

I’ve never paid for virus protection, nor have I ever had a virus that wasn’t easy to take care of with free scanners like avg, malwarebytes, ad-aware. Over the years, using software like Norton and McAfee just hog resources and annoy the crap out of you. Best advice, use linux lol

  • jim

the best two antivirus programs are Avira and Comodo. I have and still use both as the full internet security suites(not run simultaneous but on different computers). Avira offers a standalone free AV.The paid version of Avira Security Suite has top notch AV, webguard protection and a very customizable firewall. Comodo no longer offers a standalone AV like Avira, but only an Internet Security Suite instead. The AV in Comodo is top-notch(slightly slower scheduled scan speed than Avira)with definition files plus cloud AV protection, a life-saver Defense+ module to protect any undesired file access/changes, and the BEST firewall of any product made. Comodo is also completely free.

I am using AVG internet security with Anti-virus, am quite happy with it to date, even if it is slow on full computer scan it doesn’t slow down use of internet or other programs noticably at all, Norton conflicted with other syware or cleanware programs, F-Secure took up too much disk space, Zone Alarm just didn’t work well at all. My wife just bought Bitdefender Internet so will check it out over next month or so.

  • Morris

I don’t see Forefront or MSE in the ratings at all. Were these products considered for testing or did they just not make the top 10?

  • nigel

I have used norton for years and was not happy with it so i went to avaquest which was very good and that started leting viruses in so went back to norton which was very good now that i have gone on 360 I am getting viruses again I put bitdefender in and it found 20 viruses. I am thinking of sticking with bitdefender

  • AleX

I took advantage of a laptop to try Vipre. I must admit that the installation was simple, easy and fast. But what struck me even more was not homogeneous scanning reduces the CPU performance! I managed to get rid of all other products, and now use only Vipre. I could never understand why some of these programs find a lot of spyware, while others none. Now Vipre simply find some cookies to remove and runs quietly in the background without consuming many resources, or wasting my time. After classifying the “number 1″, the Symantec antivirus product for the last decade or two, and having experimented with many other providers of antivirus software, I can say without a shadow of a doubt that VIPRE is just incredible! If we add the incredible support, it is the best! The performance of Vipre were judged very well by the press. From personal experience, I can really recommend this product to anyone seeking the best antivirus solution.

  • DL

I believe Norton Internet Security is the best protection software around. I’ve used 2010 version, am using the 2011 now and will be upgrading to 2012 soon. I’ve never had any problems with spyware or viruses, and I completely trust NIS.
I’ve tried Eset software as well, but didn’t quite like it. It seems to oversee some files, that NIS catches. At the same time I’ve never had a false positive on NIS.

  • rajiv

In all antivirus now days in 2011 the Bitdefender Antivirus Plus 2012 is a great antivirus.
    becoz of:-

    1] Fastest scanning speed.
2] Low system resource used ( in 2012 version BD takes only 1.2MB of ram…Surprise!!!!!!!!)
3] Auto-pilot mode for silent security.
4] Scan Dispatcher – Triggers system scans when resource usage falls below a certain
threshold to avoid any impact on your system’s performance.
5] Search Advisor – Gives advance warning of risky websites right in your Google and Bing
    search results.

Well i believe that if you really want a professional protection for your computer Bitdefender is the best choice, indeed its a little more complex than the others and may use a little bit more of youre resources but thats because its really trying to keep your computer clean and safe.I used untill 2 years ago Kaspersky, Avg and Norton but i can tell from my experience that the best protection is Bitdefender.

  • deepak yadav

Avast antivirus is very bad ! Whenever i installed it , it blocked my windows ! Now i use AVG antivirus which is vry gud ! Norton antivirus is also gud bt it takes more time to update !

  • Adil

I tried all these anti-viruses and all i can say is that there is nothing better the AVG in detection and efficiency. they all let slip one virus or another but with AVG I don’t have to worry.
